Reading Buddies

In 1-224 we have something called reading buddies.  Our reading buddies are 4th graders.  In reading buddies we read books to them, they read books to us, we draw pictures of them, and they draw pictures of us.  Sometimes we go upstairs to their classroom.  And sometimes they come downstairs to our classroom.

Math

In math we measure stuff and count stuff.  When we measure stuff, we get a piece of paper, measure the stuff, and write it down.  We measure with paper clips, tiles, and rulers.  When we count stuff we always check it to see if it is right.

Birthdays

We have birthday meetings in our classroom.  First, we tell the person what we like about them.  Then we draw pictures of them or something they like.  We make a book out of the pictures, and the birthday person takes it home.  We have cupcakes at lunch.

Word Study

In word study we write on white boards.  We learn rules about words.  For example, whenever f, l, s, or z are at the end of a word, they are doubled.  We call this a bonus letter.  We also learn about vowels.  When two vowels are together, we usually only hear the sound of the first one.  We also write trick words.  Trick words are words that do not follow the rules.  We can memorize them easily.

read aloud

In read aloud we read Junie B. Jones books, Magic Tree House books, Fox books, and Adventures in Cartooning.  Read aloud is very fun!  Junie B. Jones is the kind of girl who likes to say the word stupid.  During read aloud we practice making pictures in our minds, retelling the story, and thinking about the characters.

Reading Workshop

In reading workshop we read two different kinds of books.  We read information books and just right books.  Right now we are getting to know the characters in our books.  It is really, really FUN!!

Writing Workshop

In writing workshop we write information books.  We write about... Kittens, little sisters, school, fish, books, parties, brothers, sisters, and candy.  Some of us LOVE it.

Front Yard

On Mondays and Wednesdays we have Front Yard.  In front yard we play outside in a yard that is in front of our school.  We play... tag, puppies, toilet tag, monkey bars, family, and color tag.  We love it and have fun.

Class Trip

My mom and other parents came on a class trip.  We went to the New Victory Theater.  We saw a one man circus show.  The man did tricks.  One trick was when he stood on only half of the ladder.  I thought he was going to fall, but he didn't.  In another trick, the man was standing on a chair and tipping to the side.  He did not fall over.

It was so much fun!

Chinese New Year

My mom and dad came into our class.  We made lanterns and red envelopes.  We did lion dancing.  We put fake money and notes in our red envelopes.  In China, grownups give money to kids if they are good during the year.  We used Chinese newspaper and tissue paper on our lanterns.  In China, they put lights and candles in the lanterns so they will light up.

It was so much fun!  Gung Hey Fat Choy!

music class

In music class we... play games, sing songs, and play instruments.  It is really fun!  Our music teacher is really nice.

Our Class Video

My mommy and daddy came into school last week.  They were going to make a video of us.  We went out in the hallway with them so they could film us.  They used a flip camera.  The asked us questions about Valentine's day.  They put up posters we made on the wall for background decoration.  Today they showed us the finished video.  Each kid in our class was in it.  We talked about love.  It was awesome.

Art

In art we... make collages, we make scultptures out of clay, we draw shapes and lines, and we paint.  Art is really fun!   Our art teacher, Rebecca, is really nice.

100th Day of School

On the 100th day of school we... bring in 100 things, blow 100 bubble gum bubbles, and do things 100 times.   We do things like... jumping jacks, laying down for 100 seconds, and jumping 100 times.  The 100th day of school is really, really fun!

Writing Workshop

In our class we have writing workshop. We write true stories about our lives.  We learn how to become better writers.  We look at Mem Fox's books and learn from her.  We use sound words, elipses, bit-by-bit action, "show, not tell," bold words, and back-and-forth talking.  We love it, sometimes.

Choice Time

In our class we have choice time.  We play... legos, we draw on white boards, gears, drawing on paper, blocks and more!
